Breakneck Butterfly
Breakneck Butterfly was made for first Montclair State University Game Jam, which it won first place in.
Breakneck Butterfly can be played here!
This is the first game I've made with a team and it's all because my friend turned to me when the Game Jam was announced and asked if I wanted to partner up. I said yes without giving much thought, now look at me! I love designing games!
Breakneck Butterfly was a wonderful learning experience and foray into games. Figuring out how to research a genre, finding games we wanted to emulate, learning how to implement the parts we thought were cool, designing levels... what a great time.
I think other than wishing I learned the value of documentation before working on this project my biggest regret was not pushing for a prototype as soon as possible to work out some design kinks. The main parry mechanic was on the verge of being perfect if we had just tested it out more before shipping the game.
I really want to return to this game one day and do everything we left on the cutting room floor.
Everything in the gallery is art I did for the game.
Our brainstorming sheet can be found here.
An in-depth look of how the game was designed can be found here.
And my related essay on the "shmup" genre can be found here.
